The ancient Mayans worshipped different gods and goddesses, who were playing an important role in all aspects of life. Itzamna is the creator god, the founder of maize and cacao, as well as writing, calendars and medicine. In Maya mythology, an upper god and creator deity thought to reside in the sky. Itzamna is one of the most important gods in the Classic and Postclassic Maya pantheon.
